New Bill: Keep Antibiotics Safe Act

After a recent study increased the estimate of annual deaths from antibiotic resistant infections in the United States to as high as 160,000, Senator David Koehler (D, Peoria) introduced the Keep Antibiotics Safe Act (SB1186) to ban the routine use of antibiotics in food production.

Medical Professionals, Public Health Advocates Call to End Overuse of Antibiotics in Food Production

Medical professionals and public health advocates spoke in favor of legislation to stop the overuse of antibiotics in industrial agriculture during a Senate hearing at the State Capitol Wednesday morning. The legislation, SB3429, sponsored by State Senator Daniel Biss (D, Evanston) would end the common practice of regularly feeding healthy animals antibiotics, which experts warn contributes to the rise and spread of antibiotic-resistant bacteria, sometimes referred to as “superbugs.” 

Illinoisans are clamoring for McDonald's and its meat suppliers to curb their use of antibiotics in cattle and hog farming.

Broad Array of Public Interest Groups Call on Subway, the World’s Largest Fast-Food Chain: Help Save Antibiotics!

A letter signed by nearly 60 public interest, medical, public health, environmental and animal welfare organizations was delivered to Subway Founder and CEO Fred DeLuca and Senior VP Suzanne Greco today, asking the restaurant giant to phase out meats produced with routine use of antibiotics (i.e. for growth promotion and disease prevention). As the largest fast-food chain in the world, Subway’s action on this issue would help tackle the growing health crisis of antibiotic resistance.
