Average Peoples Gas customer paying more than $13 per month for mismanaged pipe replacement program

Peoples Gas released a second quarter report Friday on its troubled pipe replacement program. The report shows that the average Peoples Gas customer paid a $13.14 monthly surcharge for the program over the past quarter -- more than eleven times the $1.14 per month the legislature was told customers would pay when it passed a law authorizing the surcharge in 2013. In June, the surcharge accounted for 17 percent of the average customer’s bill, almost as much as the cost of the gas itself.

This bill would limit interest rates on loans and go a long way toward protecting consumers, especially veterans, who are often victimized by predatory lenders.

Consumer tips: What families should know about child tax credit payments that start July 15

Starting Thursday, many families with children under 18 will start getting monthly payments as part of the American Rescue Plan that became law this spring. Eligible families will get payments every month through December by direct deposit or by paper checks or preloaded debit cards that come in the mail. These payments will add up to half the child tax credit you should be entitled to for 2021; you can claim the rest next year when you file your tax return.
