Transit Not Traffic

Illinois PIRG is building support to make sure we have a public transportation system that will allow the region to grow without making traffic worse. We need lawmakers to adequately fund the current transit system, and ensure resources for its growth in the decades to come.

Overview

No one likes wasting time in traffic. Unfortunately, Northeastern Illinois has some of the worst traffic congestion in the country. Residents waste about $1,000 per year on work time and extra gas lost while idling in traffic. At the same time, public transit, which alleviates traffic congestion, faces a funding crisis.

Transit, unlike our highways, has been without capital funding for several years. Now, we're facing a $10 billion hole in funding just to keep the system in good working order. Illinois PIRG is leading the charge to fix our broken transit funding system, and bring fast, reliable public transportation to millions across the state.
